Chex Quest

8 March 2022

So I got super into DOOM games recently and finally went and played the legendary Chex Quest! And then I played the official second and third episode, which most people don't know about! And then I played some fan-made sequels (which were okay)! And then I played Chex Quest HD!

I think Chex Quest is really good and cool. It's got a great tone that is sort of unmatched in the genre of boom shooters.

Chex Quest 3 (Official)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Chex Quest is actually fantastic. They're great goofball shooters with a fun cartoonish aesthetic that works really well in the Doom engine! All three episodes play extremely well together. It might be a little counterintuitive, but Chex Quest 3 is a collection of all three episodes by the original authors. Def worth a play!

Chex Quest 4: Galactic Conflict

⭐⭐⭐🕳🕳 Honestly, a bit of a letdown. Quite a number of cheap badly-telegraphed insta-kills in the Reactor level, and agonizing moving platform segments in the level before that. It's a nice aesthetic continuition that feels like it mostly fits the previous titles, though the seams really start showing after a few levels and it just doesn't entirely match the vibes of the original series.

Chex Quest 4: Flemmed to the Core

⭐⭐⭐⭐🕳 This was actually super fun! Liked the environmental designs and the monsters were really fun. Honestly I think this nailed the original tone really well, generally ramping up the difficulty but not going quite as hard as Galactic Conflict.

Chex Quest HD (Official)

⭐⭐⭐⭐🕳 Four stars because Marceleine the Vampire Queen is a chex warrior in it. Otherwise fairly meh, though a comfy remake of a real classic.
